Why you don’t NEED to read this book!

Today, (well, more like tonight as it’s almost 22.00 p.m) I thought of writing a review of the novel Need by Carrie Jones. I read it many years ago and so I don’t remember everything as if I’d just finished it, but what I do remember is this…

This book was bad. And not bad in the sense that it’s bad and it ends up being a good bad. No, no. This is plain old bad. BAD. If Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey had a child together, then that child had been sick, this book would’ve appeared from the vomit. (Sorry, I know that was probably offensive, but this book is BAD). Look, I hate being horrible, especially towards a book, because let’s be honest, books are like angels on Earth. But as we all know, some angels decided to do their own thing and fell and turned bad. Not all angels can be great. Same goes for books.

I applaud all authors for being able to write a book. It’s difficult, it’s hard work and consumes a lot of energy and time. And I applaud anyone who has managed to publish their book (whether this is self-published or traditionally published). So, I do applaud Carrie Jones for writing a book and getting it published. *clap clap*

But that’s where it ends.

Let’s start, shall we?

Now, I will start with the cover. It’s… meh. It’s not bad, it’s definitely not the worse! (If you want to read about the worst YA covers, here’s the link https://writersmania.wordpress.com/2015/04/16/worst-ya-covers-ever/) So, the cover isn’t too bad but, I don’t think it’s great. I do love the branches on the neck and the glitter is pretty… but the neck and chin just seems awkward… I don’t know, maybe I’m being too harsh, but it just isn’t a cover that stands out that much compared to others.

First of all, for you to get an idea of what this book is about, here’s what the back cover says:

Zara collects phobias the way other girls collect Facebook friends. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has readers rapidly turning the pages.

Well… That last part about getting us readers rapidly turning the pages is questionable. So, you get the picture, right? Teenage girl goes through a family trauma, her parents can’t take care of her and so she’s sent off someplace where no one gives a **ck about her, so basically she can just wander around doing whatever she wants. In the new town she meets the bad boy/good looking/been waiting for the right girl my entire life but when I smile all the girls drop dead/perfect style/intelligent/fall in love with plain girl…Did I miss something?

So basically she finds out that the creepy guy that’s following her around is a pixie that points his finger at her (that seriously happens…) and leaves glitter behind. Shit, he must be one hell of an EVIL dude to shit glitter everywhere he goes and point his finger at you! I’d actually feel bad for the guy if it weren’t for the finger pointing. I mean… that’s traumatic!

So, after the new girl Zara meets her new friends in a matter of seconds, because I guess everyone is really friendly there… They decide to investigate the creepy dude and discover that he’s a pixie… and here is when the major problem starts.

There is no reaction whatsoever. No surprise. No questioning. So basically you discover that this guy isn’t human… and that seems okay? That seems normal to you? That old library you went to just happened to have a shitload of information on pixies and you come to the conclusion that he must be a pixie… A pixie.

Oh, and these pixie’s just want women to basically fool around with, and men to suck their blood from (Oh yeah, the pixies are also like half vampire). Okay… I don’t know if this is meant to be sexy or just truly and utterly retarded.

So after realising that the pixie wants Zara to be his queen or some stupid thing like that, they all assume this must be true and shrug. So… giant ants the size of a house exist! Oh, yeah, that’s completely believable. And vampires too!

Oh, well, vampires exist too in this story by the looks of it!

Because…

The romance was not at all hot or romantic. The plot made no sense… Everything just was too easy, too simple. There was no obstacle… and when there was, there was always a simple solution. Because writing a book is easy! I just need to make it look like the lead is in danger for 2 seconds… but don’t worry! You won’t have time to actually fear for her, because I will find a solution! She won’t need to struggle, I’ll just make sure that whatever she needs to get out of the problem is there at exactly the right moment!

The plot is the same plot we’ve been reading in YA for years. The main lead was just downright stupid. She would get into dangerous situations for no reason whatsoever… and then she’d need someone to save her. She continued to ramble on and on and on about how awesome and beautiful the love interest is.

Oh, and did I forget to mention there’re werewolves in the story? Yeah… because you know? Pixie’s that suck little boys blood, shit glitter and point fingers dramatically isn’t enough! So, let me add in some werewolves.

811999 I’m sorry, but I had to do it! Every time I think of the pixie pointing, this comes into my head! (I need to stop watching Family Guy!).

The only good thing about this book was that at the beginning of each chapter it would have a phobia with its description. That was pretty cool. Why  phobias? We don’t know. The lead is so messed up in the head it wouldn’t have surprised me if she’d had the name of different drugs as an obsession.

Basically, I think this book was published because after the success of Twilight publisher’s wanted to make money. The author actually has a degree in writing, but that doesn’t seem to mean anything nowadays anyway. Writing is subjective, I get that, but still, the attitude people seem to have nowadays is as follows; YA is for young idiot girls with no brain… They just want hot romance with some supernatural element and a dramatic looking cover… with those three keys, we will make a lot of money!

Thank you, publishers, for believing in me!

But,  need I remind you, that if you keep pissing people off with these stupid methods, one day, it will backfire! You’ve been warned…

Did you hate Need? Or did you like it? What book do you think isn’t necessary reading?

By the way, this book is actually a series…

need-series Because, who wants a stand alone, right? I can’t even imagine how they managed to expand this story into four books… maybe the pixies pointed more dramatically? Maybe they farted and the glitter exploded all over the place and intoxicated the werewolves and they transformed into angels?

  1. Hey, thanks for following my blog, I had a look at yours, and it’s amazing by the way! As I was having a look a few books I need to read stood out but the “Shatter Me” trilogy particularly caught my eye. I could research it, but I’m terrified that I’ll stumble across spoilers. Could you give me a bit of insight having read it?

    • Sure!! I would definitely recommend it, however, with this book, most people seem to either love it or hate it… Basically, you follow the story of a young girl that can’t touch anyone, until one day she meets a boy that she can touch. The Government wants to use her as a weapon and they decide to recruit her… She manages to escape from the “bad guys” and joins a group of people that are like her. It’s a dystopia, with elements of romance, action, comedy. It’s definitely a book worth checking out, even if you end up not liking it, the author is quite good at writing! And the cover is gorgeous!:) Would you like to know anything else about the book? I didn’t want to give away too much and end up ruining it!:) Let me know!

      • Haha. Thanks so much, I know that same problem – not knowing how much to say as you don’t want to say too much to spoil the story, whilst wanting to say every detail to get your appreciation across! It actually sounds quite good, and even though not really like any other books I’ve read I’ll definitely give it a go. Y’know I may as well broaden my range XD. Thanks again, and I’ll let you know how it goes!

  2. There are way too many books (it seems to me) with these weird paranormal plots and even stranger characters. How does one relate to these Twilight Zone-like characters and circumstances? Our young adults are really that freaky that this just makes perfect sense to them?!?

Pardon me. I’m a baby boomer. What do I know? (Please. That’s a rhetorical question.) It is true that any romance novel ending with a happily ever after is not based in reality. However, many contemporary romance novels are written by authors who care enough about their potential readers to include plots that show that love of family and friends and community is important in life.

    • Totally agree with everything you’ve said! It seems that many of these books are losing the essential makings of a novel, but it doesn’t seem to matter nowadays, as what’s important is making money. Now all that matters is how many copies can be sold as quickly as possible, without even considering how this is going to affect the writing industry in the future. We will be left with a society that will consider Twilight a classic masterpiece!

      • Well, I hope that won’t be the case. Twilight is definitely not classic material. Unfortunately, the creators of movies and TV shows have impacted the quality of books being printed.

However, for every trashy book that’s published there are so many more that are worthy of our time and interest. Self-publishing in my opinion will improve the quality of books being published by the big publishing companies. I think it be hooves anyone who truly cares about literature and education to support those writers who self-publish.

This issue is similar to “news” produced by the networks and so-called mainstream media. To be informed one must rely on oneself. To be well-read, one must take the time to look for books and recommendations for books that are read-worthy.

That’s the most terrifying description I’ve ever read. You deserve an award for coming up with it XD
