YA; what we most hate but secretly enjoy…

books.jpg

So everyone who has read YA will probably know some or all of these points. The truth is, most of the time, this sort of thing irritates the crap out of me, but it’s reached a point where it’s so common for these points to be established in YA books that when it doesn’t happen, I kinda miss them. Sick, right?

LOVE TRIANGLES

Love triangles are a MUST, ‘cos you know, the female heroine CANNOT do with just ONE HOT GUY, she needs two.

I mean, the book would totally suck with just a normal couple relationship going on, right?

Still, I kinda like the whole triangle issue in most cases, even though I want to throw the book across the room.

HOTNESS

For some reason, every main character in a YA book is HOT. And not just Zack Efron hot, no, no…GREEK GOD MYTHOLOGY TEXTBOOK HOT.

zac1.jpg Is he hot? I wouldn’t know, ‘cos in YA, he wouldn’t even be allowed as a secondary character. That’s how wickedly HOT they all are. Sorry, Zac, maybe they’ll let you play in the movie so they keep it down a level for us mortals.

INSTALOVE

All YA books need a nice quick instalove going on. And I mean, it’s perfectly natural with all of those GREEK GODS & GODDESSES walking around, all single and helpless!

THE STUPID HEROINE

Don’t go into the forest alone at night, there’s a beast.’

*Walks into forest alone, leaving behind sword to protect those that stayed behind, IN PROTECTION*

‘Don’t trust him, he’s dangerous.’

*Falls in love, then is surprised that the guy is evil.*

POWERFUL HEROINE IS INCAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING

Most main character’s discover they are some type of super duper powerful species… A lost princess with really cool powers, a witch, a mutant, etc, etc… But for some reason, they seem incapable of fighting for themselves or learning anything at all.

All they ever do is get into trouble, get others into trouble and then moan and groan about getting into trouble.

THE RIDICULOUS VILLAIN

Is it that difficult to make a believable villain? Apparently it is! For some reason, villains in YA are just there to make the 2 lovers pretend that their relationship means something…

THE TWISTS

We all know about those incredibly well thoughtout twists we come across in YA’s… So well planned you didn’t see it coming at all.

AT ALL.
